Deceptive Tastes

As part of an internal initiative that encourages company creatives to explore technological solutions, we created a Virtual Reality (VR) experience that would be able to alter a foodie's perception of reality. We conceptualised a restaurant environment, and added elements which would appeal to the senses of sight, sound and taste. By doing this, we found that we could change individuals' perceptions of what they were eating. For example, they could be led to thinking they had just popped a juicy piece of meat into their mouth, when, in actual fact, it was a tofu cube.

Using Unity, we designed a 3D restaurant environment with food-related sound effects. We also built a specially-designed fork, which had a heat detector and a motion sensor. This fork would be able to communicate with the software, to judge when an individual had picked up and transferred food into his or her mouth. Individuals would experience the alternate reality through an oculus. Taken together, we found that it was possible to alter perceptions of reality, especially when it came to meal times.
